The Forbes House
A Warren & Mahoney
Design – Renovated

Area : 550 square metres

Architect : Warren & Mahoney

Originally designed in 1976, the Forbes House was among the grandest of Warren & Mahoney’s residential builds. Stylistically, this home is both sophisticated and beguilingly simple. The design was always a modernist rejection of fussy decoration. Nothing about the original intent has changed. This is a home that’s all about geometry, solidity and stature. Renovating this valuable piece of Christchurch design history was an enjoyable challenge for the Mackay team.

Remarks from the owner
“Nothing was ever a problem. James always had a solution. Will, Cory, Mike; the whole team in fact were great, and always obliging. I’d have no hesitation having them back.”

The Forbes House – A Warren & Mahoney Design, Renovated

Originally designed in 1976, the Forbes House was among the grandest of Warren &
Mahoney’s residential builds. Stylistically, this home is both sophisticated and beguilingly simple.
The design was always a modernist rejection of fussy decoration. Nothing about the
original intent has changed. This is a home that’s all about geometry, solidity and stature.
Renovating this valuable piece of Christchurch design history was an enjoyable challenge for the Mackay team.

Area : 550 square metres

Architect : Warren & Mahoney

Works : The renovation brief included insulation plus industrial-scaled double-glazing. The Mackay team was also tasked with righting any design wrongs which had crept in since the original build. Re-creating a highly resolved pool and surrounds was also a key requirement.

Remarks from the owner :
“Nothing was ever a problem. James always had a solution. Will, Cory, Mike; the whole team in fact were great, and always obliging. I’d have no hesitation having them back.”

Modernising & Future proofing :
The entire renovation remained true to the original 1970s design ethos. It was about clean lines and elegant functionality. The home has been re-specified with an eye on comfort for the next few decades and beyond. Heating demands were answered using double-glazing and a diesel central heating system. The in-ground pool and surrounds were substantially upgraded and beautified with bluestone tiles. The house is once more a masterpiece.
